How to split a PDF
Three quick steps. Nothing to install and nothing leaves your device.
Add your PDF
Drag one PDF onto the box above or click it to browse. The tool shows the file size and counts its pages.
Choose how to split
Extract page ranges such as "1-3, 5" into new files, or split every page into its own PDF.
Split and download
Press Split PDF and download one PDF, or a ZIP when the result is more than one file.
How to separate the pages of a PDF
Choose Split every page and the tool makes one PDF for each page of your file, packed in one ZIP.
- Add your PDF.
- Choose Split every page.
- Press Split PDF. Progress shows the page being split.
- Download the ZIP.
- Needs two or more pages: a one-page PDF has nothing to split.
- File names: like yourfile_page01.pdf, with leading zeros so the files sort in page order.
- Many pages, many files: a long PDF gives a long ZIP and takes longer on your device.
- Only some pages? Use Extract pages from PDF with one row per page.
- Put them back together: Merge PDF joins the single pages again.

Why split a PDF?
A PDF is often bigger than the part you need. You may want to send only the signed page of a contract, pull one chapter from a long report, separate a scanned stack into single documents, or stay under an upload limit by sending a piece at a time.
This tool does it on your own device, so private papers are not uploaded to a server.
Two ways to split
- Extract page range. Type the pages you want. Each row you fill in becomes its own PDF, so one row gives a single PDF and several rows give a ZIP of separate files.
- Split every page. You get a ZIP with one PDF per page, named like yourfile_page01.pdf. This needs a PDF with at least two pages.
How to write the page ranges
- Single pages: separate them with commas, for example 2, 5, 9.
- Spans: join two numbers with a hyphen, for example 3-7.
- Mixed: combine both, for example 1-3, 5.
- Order is kept as you type it. Entering 5, 1 puts page 5 first. A reversed span such as 7-3 is read as 3-7.
- Page numbers must exist. If you type a page that is outside the document, the tool tells you the valid range.
How this tool splits your file
- Pages are copied as they are. Text and images on the copied pages are carried over without being redrawn, so quality is unchanged.
- Compatibility mode is a safety net. If a PDF has damaged internal data and cannot be split normally, the tool redraws each page as an image and rebuilds the file. It tells you when it did this. The pages look right, but the text can no longer be selected.
- One file at a time. The tool works on a single PDF per session. Press Start Over to load another.
- Clear file names. Results are named yourfile_pages.pdf, yourfile_range01.pdf, yourfile_page01.pdf, or packed in yourfile_ranges.zip and yourfile_split.zip.
Tips for better results
- Need to put pieces back together? Use Merge PDF.
- Result still too large to send? Compress PDF reduces size, and Compress PDF to 200KB or 500KB fit common upload limits.
- Want to rearrange or delete pages instead? Edit PDF can move and delete pages and add text.
- Want the pages as pictures or text? PDF to JPG and PDF to TXT work on the whole file, so split first if you only need some pages.
- Password-protected file? Remove the password in your PDF viewer first, since files that need a password to open cannot be read.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about splitting PDFs with ConvertKit Lite.
Is it safe to split my PDF here?
Yes. Splitting runs in your browser, so your file is not uploaded to a server.
How do I extract specific pages?
Pick "Extract page range" and type pages like "2, 4-6". Each row you add becomes its own PDF.
Can I split every page into a separate file?
Yes. Choose "Split every page" and you will get a ZIP containing one PDF per page.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
Many files with only edit restrictions work fine. PDFs that need a password to open can't be read, so remove the password first.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no limit on our side. Very large files depend on your device's memory, so they may take longer.
What does the page count at the top mean?
After you add a file, the tool reads it and shows how many pages it has, so you know which numbers are valid for your ranges.
Can I use the same page in more than one range?
Yes. Each row is built separately, so a page can appear in several rows, and even twice in one row. Every row becomes its own file.
Can I put pages in a different order?
Yes. Pages are copied in the order you type them, so 4, 2, 1 gives a new PDF that starts with page 4.
Why can't I split every page of a one-page PDF?
There is nothing to split, so the button is turned off and a message explains it. Use Extract page range if you only want a copy.
What happens with empty range rows?
Empty rows are ignored. At least one row must have pages in it.
What is compatibility mode?
It is used only when a PDF cannot be split in the normal way. Each selected page is drawn as an image and rebuilt into a new PDF. You will see a note in the result, and the text in those pages can't be selected.
How do I know how many files I will get?
In Extract page range mode, one file per filled row, and in Split every page mode, one per page. The result box shows the count and size.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in any modern browser. Very large PDFs use a lot of memory, so a computer is safer.
Is there a watermark or an account?
No watermark, no sign-up and no limit on how many times you split.
How do I separate the pages of a PDF?
Add the PDF, choose Split every page and press Split PDF. You download a ZIP with one PDF per page.
How are the separated page files named?
Like yourfile_page01.pdf, yourfile_page02.pdf and so on, with leading zeros so they sort in page order.
