Page size, orientation and margins
- Page size: A4 or Letter.
- Orientation: Portrait or Landscape.
- Margins: Normal is 15 mm, Narrow is 8 mm, None is 0 mm and Wide is 25 mm, on every side.
- Quality: Standard, High (the default) or Maximum.
- Not offered: other sizes such as A3 or Legal.
For printing, many home printers cannot print to the very edge of the paper, so Normal or Wide is safer than None. Choose High or Maximum for sharp text.

Why convert Word to PDF?
A Word file can look different on every computer, because fonts, versions and settings change from one machine to the next. A PDF looks the same for everyone. That is why CVs, assignments, letters, invoices and forms are usually sent as PDF files.
A PDF is also harder to change by accident, and nearly every phone, browser and printer can open it. This tool builds your PDF on your own device, so private documents are never uploaded.
How this tool builds your PDF
- It reads your .docx file. The text, headings, lists, tables and images are taken from your document and shown in a preview you can open and check.
- It lays the pages out for you. The content is placed on pages with the size, orientation and margins you choose.
- It draws the pages into a PDF. Quality sets how sharp the pages are, and the PDF downloads when it is ready.
Your page options
- Page size: A4 or Letter.
- Orientation: Portrait or Landscape.
- Margins: Normal is 15 mm, Narrow is 8 mm, None is 0 mm and Wide is 25 mm.
- Quality: Standard gives the smallest file, High is the default, and Maximum gives the sharpest pages with the largest file.
Things to know
- The layout is approximate. Fonts, headers and footers, columns and text boxes may not match Word exactly. Check the preview before you convert.
- The text is not selectable. Pages are drawn as images, so the PDF cannot be searched or copied from.
- One file at a time. Convert a document, download it, then add the next one.
- .docx files only. For an old .doc file, open it in Word and save it as .docx first.
- Very long documents are lowered in quality. Browsers limit how large a page image can be, so the tool lowers the quality automatically and tells you when it did.
Tips for better results
- Use High quality for text. It keeps small text sharp. Use Standard only if the file size matters more.
- Keep images a sensible size. Very large pictures in the Word file make a heavy PDF.
- Need a smaller file? Compress PDF reduces the size, and the Compress PDF to 200KB and 500KB pages target upload limits.
- Need to join or cut pages? Use Merge PDF and Split PDF after converting.
- Need to change the PDF later? PDF to Word turns it back into an editable document, and Edit PDF adds text and drawings.
- Want searchable text? If your document is plain, try saving it as RTF and using RTF to PDF, which keeps the text selectable.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about the ConvertKit Lite Word to PDF tool.
Is my document uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, so your file stays on your device.
Can I convert an old .doc file?
Not directly. This tool reads .docx files only. Open the .doc file in Word, choose Save As, pick .docx, then upload that file.
Will the PDF look exactly like my Word file?
It keeps text, headings, lists, tables and images, but fonts, headers, footers, columns and text boxes may differ from Word. Check the preview before you convert.
Can I select or search the text in the PDF?
No. Pages are rendered as images, so the text can't be selected or searched. Use High or Maximum quality to keep text sharp.
Why is a long document lower quality?
Browsers limit how large a page image can be. For very long documents the tool lowers the quality automatically so the PDF still builds. Split the document into parts for sharper output.
Can I preview the document before converting?
Yes. After you add your file, open Preview the document to see how the text, tables and images were read. This is how the PDF will start out.
What do the margin options mean?
Normal is 15 mm, Narrow is 8 mm, None is 0 mm and Wide is 25 mm, measured on every side of the page.
Does it keep headers, footers and page numbers?
No. Headers and footers from your Word file are not carried into the PDF. Text, headings, lists, tables and images are.
Which quality should I choose?
High is a good default. Standard makes a smaller file and Maximum gives the sharpest pages with the largest file. Very long documents may be lowered automatically.
Why does it say a library could not load?
The converter loads its Word reader and PDF builder from the internet when the page opens. If you see this message, check your connection, turn off any ad blocker for this site, and reload the page.
What will my PDF be called?
It keeps the name of your Word file with a .pdf ending. For example, report.docx becomes report.pdf.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac. Long documents can take longer on older phones, so try Standard quality if it struggles.
Is there a watermark or a limit?
No watermark, no account and no limit on how many documents you convert.
Can I choose A4 or Letter when converting Word to PDF?
Yes. Page size offers A4 or Letter, and Orientation offers portrait or landscape.
What is the best margin for printing?
Normal (15 mm) suits most documents. Many home printers cannot print to the very edge, so avoid None for printing.
