Why convert a text file to PDF?
A TXT file has no formatting, so it can look different in every program and on every device. A PDF looks the same everywhere. Turning a text file into a PDF is handy for notes, logs, scripts, subtitles, poems, lists and plain-text emails that you want to print, share or keep.
The PDF is built on your own device, so private notes and documents are not uploaded to a server.
How this tool lays out your text
- Your lines stay as written. Every line break and blank line is kept. Lines that are too long for the page wrap onto the next line, and tabs become four spaces.
- You choose the look. Pick A4, US Letter, US Legal or A5, portrait or landscape, a font, a text size of 10, 11, 12 or 14 pt, and margins of 1, 0.75 or 0.5 inch.
- Pages are numbered if you like. Numbers appear at the bottom of each page, as 1 / 5 for example. You can turn them off.
- It reads common encodings. UTF-8, UTF-16 and Windows-1252 text are detected automatically.
- The PDF is named for you. Each PDF keeps the name of the text file with a .pdf ending.
Which font should you choose?
- Sans-serif (Helvetica): clean and modern, a good everyday choice.
- Serif (Times): suits letters, essays and printed reading.
- Monospace (Courier): keeps every character the same width, so columns made with spaces stay lined up. Best for code, logs and tables.
Special characters and other scripts
The standard PDF fonts cover Latin letters and common symbols. The tool also swaps curly quotes for straight quotes, long dashes for a hyphen, and the ellipsis for three dots, so they print cleanly. If a file contains characters the standard fonts cannot show, such as Bengali, Arabic, Hindi or Chinese, the pages are drawn as images instead. Nothing is lost, and the file list marks those files as drawn as images, but the text in them cannot be selected or searched.
Things to know
- Plain text only. There are no bold, headings, colors or pictures in a TXT file, so the PDF has none either.
- 20 MB limit per file. Larger files are refused, and an empty file gives a message.
- Only .txt and .text files are accepted. Other types are skipped.
Tips and related tools
- Use Landscape or Narrow margins for wide text. It means fewer wrapped lines in logs and tables.
- Need formatting? Write the document in Word and use Word to PDF. If you have a Rich Text file, RTF to PDF keeps the text selectable.
- Got a Word file and want plain text? DOCX to TXT extracts it, and PDF to Text does the same for PDFs.
- Join or shrink the result. Merge PDF combines files, and Compress PDF reduces the size.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about the ConvertKit Lite TXT to PDF tool.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF is created in your browser, so your text files stay on your device.
Can I select and search the text in the PDF?
Yes, for most files. Text in Latin-based languages is saved as real text. Files that use other scripts, such as Bengali, Arabic, Hindi or Chinese, are drawn as page images so the characters display correctly, and that text can't be selected.
Are line breaks and spacing kept?
Yes. Every line break and blank line is kept, and lines that are too long for the page wrap onto the next line. Tabs are converted to four spaces.
Which font should I choose?
Sans-serif or serif suit letters and notes. Monospace keeps columns of text aligned, which is best for code, logs and tables made with spaces.
Why do accented characters or symbols look wrong?
The tool reads UTF-8, UTF-16 and Windows-1252 text automatically. If a symbol can't be shown in the standard fonts, that file's pages are drawn as images instead, so characters are not replaced.
Can I convert many files at once?
Yes. Add several TXT files, convert them together, and download each PDF or one ZIP.
What page sizes can I choose?
A4, US Letter, US Legal and A5, in portrait or landscape.
Are page numbers added?
Yes, by default. A small number such as 1 / 5 appears at the bottom of every page. Choose No page numbers to turn them off.
Why were my curly quotes and dashes changed?
The standard PDF fonts do not include curly quotes and long dashes, so the tool replaces them with plain versions: straight quotes, a hyphen for dashes and three dots for an ellipsis. This only happens when the file can use the standard fonts.
What is the largest file I can convert?
Each text file can be up to 20 MB. Larger files are refused with a message. An empty file also gives a message.
What does drawn as images mean?
It appears in the file list when your text has characters the standard PDF fonts cannot show, such as Bengali, Arabic, Hindi or Chinese. The pages are drawn as pictures so the characters display correctly, but the text cannot be selected.
Which text sizes and margins are available?
Text sizes are 10, 11, 12 and 14 pt, with 11 pt as the default. Margins are Normal (1 inch), Medium (0.75 inch) and Narrow (0.5 inch).
What will my PDF be called?
It keeps the name of your text file with a .pdf ending. In the ZIP, files with the same name get a number added so none are overwritten.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac. Very large text files can take longer on older phones.
Is there a watermark or a limit?
No watermark, no account and no limit on how many files you convert.
Does it work offline?
Not fully. The page loads its PDF libraries from the internet when it opens, so you need a connection at first. Your text file itself is not uploaded.
Is it safe for confidential notes?
The PDF is created on your device and your file is not sent to a server. As with any file, keep your own copy and check the result.
