How to convert MP4 to GIF
Three quick steps. Nothing to install and nothing leaves your device.
Add your video
Drag an MP4 onto the box above or click it to browse your files. A preview player appears so you can find the moment you want.
Choose the settings
Set the frame rate (8 to 20 FPS), the GIF width (320 to 800 px, or the original width), whether it loops, and the start and end times of the clip.
Convert & download
Press Convert to GIF, follow the progress bar, then check the size and dimensions and download your animated GIF.
No watermark, no account, no limit
Many online converters add a logo to your GIF or ask you to pay to remove it. This one does neither.
- No watermark: your GIF is exactly your clip, with nothing added.
- No account: there is nothing to sign up for.
- No set limit: convert as many clips as you like. Very large videos depend on your device memory.
- Private: your video is processed in your browser and is not uploaded.

Why turn a video into a GIF?
A GIF plays on its own, loops, and needs no player, so it works in chats, emails, documents, forum posts and support articles where a video would not. It is a popular way to show a short reaction, a product demo, a screen recording or a funny moment.
This tool builds the GIF on your own device. Your video is not uploaded to a server, so private clips stay private.
How this tool makes your GIF
- You pick the part of the video. Set a start and an end time in seconds. The end time is filled in with the full length of the video, and you can lower it. If it is not later than the start, the end of the video is used.
- Frames are read one by one. The tool jumps to each moment in the clip, captures the picture, and collects the frames at the frame rate you chose.
- The size is up to you. Choose Original, 320, 480, 640 or 800 pixels wide. The height follows the video's proportions, and both numbers are kept even.
- Looping is optional. Leave Loop on for a GIF that repeats forever, or turn it off to play once.
- Encoding happens in your browser. The frames are turned into a GIF with colour dithering, which helps smooth gradients in a limited palette. The result shows its file size, dimensions and frame rate.
- The file is named after your video. clip.mp4 becomes clip.gif.
Limits to know
- Up to about 500 frames. If your clip length multiplied by the frame rate goes over 500, the frame rate is lowered automatically and a note tells you. At 10 FPS that is about 50 seconds, and at 20 FPS about 25 seconds.
- GIFs have no sound. Only the picture is kept.
- GIFs get big quickly. A GIF stores every frame and uses a limited palette, so it is usually much larger than the video it came from. Shorter clips, lower FPS and smaller widths all help.
- Choosing a width larger than the video enlarges it. That makes the GIF bigger without making it sharper.
- Your browser must be able to play the video. Some MP4 files use formats a browser cannot decode. If the preview does not play, the conversion will fail.
- One video at a time. Press Clear or Convert another to start a new one.
- An internet connection is needed once. The GIF encoder is loaded from a content delivery network when you convert.
Tips for better results
- Start with 10 FPS and 480 px. That is a good balance of smoothness and size for most clips. Use 15 or 20 FPS only for fast action.
- Trim to the best moment. Two to five seconds loops best and keeps the file small.
- Need a smaller file? Lower the width first, then the frame rate.
- Video in MOV format? Convert it first with MOV to MP4.
- Want only the sound? MP4 to MP3 extracts the audio.
- Need to shrink a still picture? Image Compressor & Resizer handles photos and screenshots, and Image Converter switches between image formats.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about converting MP4 to GIF with ConvertKit Lite.
Is it safe to convert my video here?
Yes. The conversion runs in your browser. The video is not uploaded to a ConvertKit Lite server.
Why can a GIF be much larger than the original video?
GIF uses individual frames and a limited color palette, while modern video formats use much more efficient compression. Shorter clips, lower FPS and smaller widths help.
What FPS should I use?
8–12 FPS is a practical starting point for many GIFs. Higher FPS can look smoother but usually increases processing time and file size.
Can I convert only part of a video?
Yes. Set a start and end time before converting to create a GIF from a selected section.
Does this work on mobile?
It is designed for modern browsers on desktop and mobile, although very large videos may require more memory than a phone can provide.
What formats can I add?
The upload box accepts MP4 files and other video files your browser can play. If the preview works, the converter can usually read it.
Why was my frame rate changed?
The tool keeps a GIF to about 500 frames so your browser does not run out of memory. If your clip is long, the frame rate is lowered to fit, and a message says so. Choose a shorter clip to keep the frame rate you picked.
How do I set the start and end of the clip?
Type the times in seconds in Start time and End time. Decimals work, for example 2.5. The end time is filled in with the video's length when it loads.
Does the GIF have sound?
No. GIF is a picture-only format.
Can I make the GIF play only once?
Yes. Untick Loop GIF continuously before converting.
What does the GIF width option do?
It sets the width in pixels, and the height is worked out to keep the video's shape. Original keeps the video's own width. Larger widths look sharper but make much bigger files.
Why is the conversion slow?
The tool captures every frame and then encodes the GIF on your device. More frames, a larger width and a slower device all take longer. Shorten the clip or lower the settings to speed it up.
What if I get an error?
The most common reasons are a video your browser cannot decode, a lost internet connection while loading the GIF encoder, or a seek that timed out on a very large file. Try a shorter clip or convert the video to MP4 first.
Does the GIF have a watermark?
No. The GIF contains only your clip, with no logo or text added.
Is there a limit on how many GIFs I can make?
The tool sets no limit. Very large videos depend on your device memory, so use shorter clips if a conversion is slow.
