Why convert JPG to PNG?
JPG and PNG suit different jobs. A JPG is small, but it throws away a little detail every time it is saved, and it cannot be see-through. A PNG keeps every pixel exactly and can have transparent areas, which is why logos, icons, stickers and screenshots are often PNG files.
This tool does the conversion on your own device, so your pictures are never uploaded.
How this tool converts your images
- Lossless from now on. The picture is saved as PNG with no further quality loss. Converting does not bring back detail that the JPG already lost.
- Optional resize. Choose Original size, 75%, 50% or 25%. The new width and height are shown after conversion.
- Optional white to transparent. Pixels that are white or nearly white become clear. Very light grays become partly clear, so the edges look soft instead of jagged.
- Many files at once. Convert a whole batch and download each PNG or one ZIP named jpg-to-png.zip.
What to expect
- PNG files are bigger. A photo can become several times larger than its JPG. That is normal for a lossless format.
- White removal works best on logos and drawings. It cannot tell the background from the picture, so white areas inside the image, such as eyes, shirts or highlights, also become transparent.
- Photos with a busy background need a different tool. Plain white removal will not cut out a person from a scene.
- Size limit. Images above 100 megapixels are refused with a message.
Tips for better results
- Cutting out a person or object? Use Remove Background, which uses AI, and save the result as PNG.
- PNG too big? Scale it down here, or shrink it further with Image Compressor & Resizer. For the web, JPG to WebP gives much smaller files.
- Going back the other way? PNG to JPG turns PNG files into smaller JPGs.
- Starting from an iPhone photo? Convert it first with HEIC to JPG, or use Image Converter to go from HEIC straight to PNG.
- Need a PDF? JPG to PDF places your pictures into one document.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about the ConvertKit Lite JPG to PNG tool.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The PNG is created in your browser, so your files stay on your device.
Will converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?
No. A JPG has already lost some detail, and PNG cannot bring it back. PNG keeps the image exactly as it is from now on, with no further loss.
Why is the PNG larger than the JPG?
PNG is lossless, so it stores more data than JPG, which compresses with loss. Photos can become several times larger.
How does "Make white transparent" work?
Pixels that are white or almost white become transparent, with a soft edge for light grays. It works best on logos and drawings with a plain white background. White areas inside the picture also become transparent.
Can I convert many files at once?
Yes. Add several JPG files, convert them together, and download each PNG or one ZIP.
Which files can I add?
JPG and JPEG files only. For other types, such as WebP, HEIC or GIF, use the Image Converter.
Which sizes can I choose?
Original size, 75%, 50% or 25% of the width and height. The size you pick is applied to every file in the batch.
Will the PNG keep the same pixels as the JPG?
Yes, at Original size. Each pixel of the JPG is saved exactly as it appears, with no extra loss.
Exactly which pixels does Make white transparent affect?
Pixels where red, green and blue are all very high (about 250 or more out of 255) become fully clear. Slightly darker near-whites fade out gradually. Everything darker stays as it is.
Can I undo the transparency?
The setting is only applied during conversion. Convert the file again with Keep as is selected to get a copy with the original background.
Is there a size limit?
Images above 100 megapixels are refused. Very large files also depend on your device's memory, so a computer is safer than a phone.
What is in the ZIP download?
One PNG for each image, named after the original. If two files share a name, a number is added to the second.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac.
Can I convert JPG to PNG on a Mac?
Yes. Open the page in Safari, Chrome or Firefox, add the JPG and press Convert to PNG. There is nothing to install.
Do I need Preview or Photoshop on my Mac?
No. The tool runs in your browser, so you do not need Preview, Photoshop or any other app.
