Convert a JPG to Excel
JPG (also called JPEG) is the format most phone cameras and scanners save, so it is the most common way a table ends up as a picture. This tool reads the text in the JPG and arranges it into rows and columns you can edit.
- Both .jpg and .jpeg work. They are the same format with different file extensions.
- Use the original file. Each time a JPG is saved again it loses a little detail, and small text turns soft. A first-generation photo or scan reads best.
- Table mode first. It splits each line into columns by spacing. Use Plain text mode if the columns come out wrong.
- Check the confidence score. A low score means you should read through the cells before you rely on them.

Why use an image to Excel converter?
A photo or screenshot of a table cannot be sorted, summed or searched. Running OCR (optical character recognition) reads the text in the picture so you can work with it in Excel instead of typing it out by hand. It suits receipts, printed price lists, report screenshots, class timetables and tables from scanned pages.
The text recognition runs inside your browser. Your image is not uploaded to a server, so private documents stay on your device.
Convert JPG, PNG and screenshots to Excel
The converter accepts PNG, JPG (JPEG), WebP and BMP images, so a screenshot, a scan or a photo from your phone all work, as long as the file is saved in one of those formats. It is built for pictures that contain a table or a list of printed text.
- Screenshots of tables. Text in a screenshot is sharp and straight, which gives the best OCR results.
- Receipts, invoices and bills. Printed documents can be read into rows and columns. Check amounts and totals against the original, because OCR can misread digits.
- Price lists, timetables and reports. Any printed table you only have as a picture can be turned into a spreadsheet.
- Photos of paper. These work too, but a straight, evenly lit photo matters more than the camera you use.
How this tool reads your image
- An OCR engine reads the words. It finds each line of text in the picture together with the position of every word. The first run loads the engine and the language data for the language you picked.
- Table mode builds columns from spacing. Words that sit close together on a line stay in the same cell. A wider gap starts a new cell, and cells that line up from line to line go in the same column.
- Plain text mode keeps it simple. Each line of text becomes one row with everything in the first column, which you can split yourself in Excel.
- You get a result summary. The tool shows the number of rows and columns and an overall confidence score for the reading.
- The preview is editable. Click any cell and type to fix a mistake. The columns are labelled A, B, C and the rows are numbered like in Excel, and your edits go into the file you download.
- Numbers can become real numbers. With the option ticked, values such as 1,250 or 12.5 are saved as numbers so Excel can add them up. The option is applied when you download.
- The file is named after your image. receipt.jpg becomes receipt.xlsx, with the data on one sheet called Sheet1 and column widths set to fit.
Limits to know
- Columns are guessed from spacing. Table lines and borders are not detected, so a table with tight or uneven spacing can end up with misaligned columns.
- Only the text is copied. Colours, fonts, borders, merged cells and formulas are not recreated. Everything arrives as plain values.
- You can edit cells, not add them. The preview lets you fix the text in existing cells. If you need extra rows or columns, add them in Excel after downloading.
- One image and one language at a time. Choose the language that matches the text. Press Start Over for the next image.
- Quality of the picture matters. Blurry, tilted, dark or low-resolution images give more mistakes. Check the confidence score and read through the cells.
- Numbers with leading zeros stay as text. A value like 007 is kept as it is, so codes and ID numbers are not changed. Values with symbols such as a currency sign or a percent sign also stay as text.
- An internet connection is needed. The OCR engine, the language data and the Excel library are loaded from a content delivery network.
Tips for better results
- Use a sharp, straight, high-contrast picture. Screenshots usually read better than photos of paper.
- Crop to the table. Remove headers, logos and background so the engine only sees the data you need.
- Do not shrink the image first. Small text needs enough pixels to be read, so keep the original resolution where you can.
- Stuck with misaligned columns? Switch to Plain text, then split the column in Excel with Text to Columns.
- iPhone HEIC photo? Convert it first with HEIC to JPG, because HEIC files are not accepted here.
- The table is in a PDF? Try PDF to Excel.
- Need another spreadsheet format? XLSX to CSV and CSV to XLSX switch between Excel and CSV, and JSON to Excel turns JSON data into a sheet.
Image to Excel converter FAQ
Quick answers about converting JPG, PNG and screenshots to Excel with ConvertKit Lite.
How do I convert an image to Excel?
Add your JPG, PNG, WebP or BMP image, choose Table or Plain text mode and the language of the text, then press Extract to Excel. Check the preview, fix any mistakes by clicking the cells, and download the .xlsx file. The tool uses OCR to read the text and works out the columns from the spacing between words.
Is this image to Excel converter free?
Yes. It is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no conversion limit. Very large images depend on your device's memory, because everything runs in your browser.
Which image formats can I convert to Excel?
PNG, JPG (JPEG), WebP and BMP. Screenshots and phone photos work as long as they are saved in one of these formats. HEIC photos from an iPhone are not accepted, so convert them to JPG first. TIFF is not on the supported list.
Can I convert a screenshot of a table to Excel?
Yes. Upload the screenshot, keep Table mode, and the tool reads the text and arranges it into rows and columns you can edit. Screenshots usually give better results than photos of paper because the text is sharp and straight.
Can I convert a photo of a receipt or invoice to Excel?
Yes, for printed receipts, invoices and bills. Use a clear, well-lit, straight photo, and check amounts and totals against the original, because OCR can misread digits.
Does the tool keep the table structure?
It rebuilds columns from the spacing between words, not from table lines or borders. Simple tables usually come out in the right columns. Complex layouts, merged cells or tight spacing can end up misaligned. In that case use Plain text mode, or fix the cells in the preview.
Will the Excel file be editable?
Yes. The download is a normal .xlsx file, so you can change values, add formulas, sort and format it in Excel. You can also fix cells in the preview before you download.
Is my image data safe?
Yes. Text recognition runs in your browser, so your image is not uploaded to a server and nothing is stored on ours. Only the OCR engine and the language data are downloaded, once, from a CDN.
Can I convert multiple images to Excel at once?
Not at the moment. The tool converts one image at a time. Convert each image in turn and combine the results in Excel.
Do I need to install software?
No. The converter runs in your browser on a computer, phone or tablet, with nothing to download or install. You do need an internet connection to load the OCR engine.
Can I convert an image to CSV instead of Excel?
Not directly, because the tool saves an .xlsx file. Download it, then use XLSX to CSV to get a CSV file.
How accurate is image to Excel conversion?
It is best on sharp, straight, high-contrast images with printed text. Accuracy drops with blur, tilt, low resolution and complex tables. Check the confidence score and fix any mistakes by clicking cells in the preview.
Can I convert JPG or PNG to Excel?
Yes. JPG, JPEG and PNG images are both supported, along with WebP and BMP. The steps are the same for every format.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes. It runs in mobile browsers as well as on computers. Choose an image file from your device. The text recognition runs on the device itself, so large photos can take longer on an older phone.
Why are my columns misaligned?
Column detection uses the spacing between words. Try a straighter, higher-resolution image, or use Plain text mode and split the data in Excel.
Which languages are supported?
English, Bengali, Hindi, Arabic, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese and Japanese. Choose the language that matches your image.
What is the difference between Table and Plain text mode?
Table mode splits each line into columns by the spacing between words. Plain text mode puts each line of text in a single cell of its own row, which is useful when the columns come out wrong.
What does the confidence score mean?
It is the OCR engine's own estimate of how sure it is about the text it read. A higher number means the reading is more likely to be right. A low number is a sign to check the cells more carefully.
Can I edit the result before downloading?
Yes. Click any cell in the preview and type to correct it. The file you download contains your changes. You cannot add new rows or columns in the preview, but you can in Excel afterwards.
What does Convert numbers to real Excel numbers do?
It saves values that look like numbers, such as 1,250 or 12.5, as numbers instead of text, so Excel can sort and add them. Values that start with a zero, like 007, and values with symbols stay as text.
Will formatting, borders and formulas be kept?
No. The tool copies the text it reads, so you get plain values. Colours, borders, merged cells and formulas are not recreated.
Can I read two languages in one image?
The tool reads one language at a time. Choose the language that most of the text is written in.
Can it read handwriting?
It is designed for printed text, and handwriting is usually read poorly. Expect many mistakes and check every cell.
Does it work offline?
No. The OCR engine, the language data and the Excel library are loaded from the internet. Your image itself is not uploaded.
What does the message about no text found mean?
The engine could not find any text in the picture. Try a sharper, higher-contrast image, crop closer to the table, or check that the right language is selected.
What if I see an error about text recognition?
This usually means the OCR engine could not load. Check your internet connection, turn off ad blockers for this site and try again.
Does it accept both .jpg and .jpeg files?
Yes. JPG and JPEG are the same format, and both are accepted, along with PNG, WebP and BMP.
Why does my JPG give poor results?
JPG compression, blur, tilt and low resolution all make text harder to read. Use the original photo instead of a copy that was saved again, crop to the table and keep the full resolution.
