Remove a background on Android
Open this page in Chrome, tap the upload area and choose a photo from your gallery or Files. Wait for the before and after preview, pick transparent, white or a color, then tap Download PNG.
- The first use downloads an AI model of about 45 MB, so use Wi-Fi if your mobile data is limited.
- Phones are slower than computers. If it takes too long, choose Fast in the Speed / quality menu.
- The PNG is saved to your usual Downloads folder.

Why remove an image background?
A cut-out lets you put a subject on anything: a clean white background for a product listing, a brand colour for a profile picture, or a transparent PNG you can drop into a design, slide or poster. It saves you from tracing around the edges by hand.
The AI runs inside your browser. Your photo is not uploaded to a server, so private pictures stay on your device.
How this tool removes the background
- An AI model finds the subject. It makes a mask of what to keep, then the mask is applied to your original photo so the background becomes transparent.
- The first use downloads the model. It is about 45 MB, and your browser keeps a copy so later images start much faster.
- You choose speed or detail. Fast works at a lower resolution and finishes sooner. Balanced is the recommended default. Best quality keeps the most fine detail but is the slowest. If you change this menu after an image is loaded, it runs again with the new setting.
- You see before and after. The original is on the left and the cut-out is on the right. The grey squares behind the result show transparent areas, and they are not part of the file.
- Pick the background you want. Transparent, white, black or any colour from the colour picker. The preview changes straight away.
- The download is a PNG. It keeps transparency and is saved with a name like photo-no-bg.png.
Limits to know
- The first image can take a minute. Most of that is the model download. After that, each image takes roughly 10 to 30 seconds, depending on your device and the speed setting.
- One image at a time. Press Use another image to start a new one.
- Very large photos are scaled down. The result is limited to about 2500 pixels on its longest side.
- The result is always a PNG. A PNG with a transparent or solid background can be large, so compress or convert it if you need a small file.
- Hard photos can leave rough edges. Busy backgrounds, a subject that is close in colour to what is behind it, and very fine hair or fur are the most difficult.
- The AI needs to load. If you are offline, or a preview window or network filter blocks the model files, the tool offers a simple mode instead. Simple mode removes one similar colour from the edges, with a sensitivity slider, so it only suits plain backgrounds.
Tips for a cleaner cut-out
- Start with a sharp, well-lit photo. A subject that stands out from the background gives the best edge.
- Try Best quality for hair, fur and fine edges. If an edge still looks rough, crop closer to the subject or try a different photo.
- Need a smaller file? Choose a white background and convert the PNG with PNG to JPG, or shrink it with Image Compressor & Resizer.
- Building a web page? JPG to WebP and Image Converter change the format of your pictures.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about the ConvertKit Lite Remove Background tool.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The AI runs inside your browser, so your photo stays on your device. Only the AI model files are downloaded, once, the first time you use the tool.
Why is the first image slow?
The first time you use the tool it downloads an AI model of about 45 MB. After that it is cached by your browser, so later images start much faster. Each image then takes roughly 10 to 30 seconds depending on your device and the speed setting.
Which image formats can I use?
You can upload JPG, PNG or WebP images. The result is downloaded as a PNG so the transparent background is preserved.
Can I replace the background with a colour instead of making it transparent?
Yes. After the background is removed, choose transparent, white, black or any custom colour before you download.
What does the Speed / quality setting do?
Fast uses a lower working resolution and finishes sooner. Balanced is the recommended default. Best quality works at the highest resolution and keeps more fine detail such as hair, but it is the slowest.
What if the AI cannot load?
This can happen if you are offline or a network filter blocks the model files. The tool then offers a simple mode that removes a background of one similar colour and has a sensitivity slider. It works best on plain backgrounds.
Can I remove the background from several images at once?
Not at the moment. The tool works on one image at a time. When you are done, press Use another image to start the next one.
Can I download a JPG instead of a PNG?
The download is always a PNG, because that is what keeps the transparent background. If you want a JPG, choose a white or coloured background and convert the PNG with PNG to JPG.
How big is the finished image?
The image is kept at its own size unless it is very large. Photos bigger than about 2500 pixels on the longest side are scaled down to that size.
What are the grey squares in the preview?
They show the transparent parts of your image. They are only a guide in the preview and are not saved in the download.
Can I change the speed setting after the image is loaded?
Yes. Change the Speed / quality menu and the background is removed again with the new setting.
Why are the edges of my cut-out rough?
This usually happens with busy backgrounds, a subject that is close in colour to its surroundings, or very fine hair. Try Best quality, use a sharper photo, or crop closer to the subject.
Do I need an internet connection?
Yes, at least the first time. The page loads the AI runtime and downloads the model once, and your browser then keeps the model for later visits. Staying online is the safest option.
Is there a watermark or a sign-up?
No. There is no account, and the tool does not add a watermark to your image.
Do I need an app?
No. The tool works in your phone browser, such as Chrome.
Why is it slow on my phone?
The AI runs on your own device, so older phones take longer. Choose Fast in the Speed / quality menu to finish sooner.
