Works on any device
WAV files are 16-bit PCM and much larger than MP3, often around 10 times the size. Converting does not restore quality that the MP3 already lost.

Why convert MP3 to WAV?

MP3 is great for storing and sharing music in small files, but it is not always the right format to work with. WAV holds the sound as raw, uncompressed audio, which many tools and devices prefer.

How this tool creates your WAV

ConvertKit Lite uses your browser's built-in audio engine to decode each MP3 into raw sound, then writes that sound into a standard WAV file.

How big will the WAV file be?

WAV size depends only on the sample rate, the number of channels and the length, not on the original MP3. Here is roughly how much space one minute of audio takes at each setting:

SettingApprox. size per minute
48,000 Hz, stereoabout 11 MB
44,100 Hz, stereoabout 10 MB
44,100 Hz, monoabout 5 MB
22,050 Hz, stereoabout 5 MB
16,000 Hz, monoabout 1.8 MB

For comparison, a typical 128 kbps MP3 is about 1 MB per minute, so a CD-quality stereo WAV is around ten times larger. Sizes are approximate.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about the ConvertKit Lite MP3 to WAV tool.

Are my audio files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs in your browser, so your files stay on your device.

Will the sound quality improve?

No. MP3 is lossy, so detail removed during MP3 encoding cannot be brought back. WAV simply stores the decoded sound without further loss, which is useful for editing software and devices that need WAV.

Why is the WAV file so much bigger?

WAV stores raw, uncompressed audio. A 3 MB MP3 can become a WAV of 30 MB or more.

Which sample rate should I choose?

Keep Original unless you need a specific rate. Lower rates such as 16,000 Hz make smaller files and suit speech, but they cut high frequencies.

Can I convert many files at once?

Yes. Add several MP3 files, convert them together, and download each WAV or one ZIP. Very long files use a lot of memory, so convert those a few at a time.

Are tags and cover art kept?

No. The WAV contains the audio only, without ID3 tags or album art.

What WAV format does this converter create?

It creates standard 16-bit PCM WAV files, the most widely supported WAV format. They open in audio editors, video editors, media players and most devices that accept WAV.

What does the Mono option do?

Mono mixes the left and right channels into a single channel. This halves the WAV file size and suits voice recordings, podcasts, lectures and phone calls, but you lose stereo separation.

Is converting MP3 to WAV lossless?

The WAV stores the decoded MP3 audio with no further quality loss. It cannot bring back detail the MP3 already lost, so it will not sound better than the MP3 you started with.

Is there a limit on file length?

There is no upload limit because nothing is uploaded, but long files need a lot of memory in your browser. Standard WAV files also top out at about 4 GB, which is roughly 6 hours of CD-quality stereo audio.

Does it work on phones and tablets?

Yes, in modern browsers that support audio decoding, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux. Large files may be slow on older phones.

Is the MP3 to WAV converter really free?

Yes. It is free with no account, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert.

Which settings are best for a voice recording?

Mono with Original sample rate keeps the most detail. Mono at 16,000 Hz makes the smallest file and suits plain speech.

Does mono lose anything?

You lose the stereo separation. For a single voice, the difference is usually small.
