Why HEIC photos won't open on Windows
iPhones save photos as HEIC to keep files small. When you copy those photos to a Windows PC, they often show a blank thumbnail or will not open in your apps, and many websites and email programs reject them. Depending on your version of Windows, you may have to add codecs from the Microsoft Store, and one of them can cost money.
The simple fix is to turn the photos into JPG, which opens everywhere. This page does that in your browser, so there is nothing to buy or install.
How to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows
- Copy your photos to the PC. Plug in your iPhone or download them from your cloud storage.
- Add them above. Click the upload area and select the .heic files. You can pick many at once.
- Choose quality and size. Keep High (95%) for the best look, or pick a smaller size for email.
- Download. Save each JPG, or take the ZIP with all of them.
Tips
- Convert in smaller batches if you have hundreds of large photos, so your browser does not run out of memory.
- Make them smaller for sharing. Use the size option, or the Image Compressor afterwards.
- Need a PDF? Turn the finished JPG files into one document with JPG to PDF.
- Prefer the general tool? The standard HEIC to JPG converter works the same way on any device.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about the ConvertKit Lite HEIC to JPG tool.
Why can't I open HEIC photos on Windows?
HEIC is the format iPhones use by default. Depending on your version of Windows, you may need extra codecs from the Microsoft Store before it can open HEIC files, and one of them can be a paid add-on. Converting the photos to JPG avoids this, because every Windows app can open JPG.
How do I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 10 or 11 without software?
Open this page in your browser, add your HEIC files, choose a quality, and press Convert to JPG. Then download each JPG or all of them as a ZIP. Nothing needs to be installed.
Does it work in Chrome, Edge and Firefox?
Yes. It runs in any modern browser on Windows, so you can use whichever one you already have.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs on your own computer, so your photos stay on your device.
Can I convert many iPhone photos at once?
Yes. Add several HEIC files, convert them together, and download one ZIP with all the JPG files. If a very large batch runs slowly, convert it in smaller groups.
Will the JPG keep my photo's quality, date and location?
Choose High (95%) to keep the JPG as close to the original as possible. The converted JPG contains the picture only, so details such as the location are not kept.
How can I stop my iPhone saving photos as HEIC?
On your iPhone, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG. Photos you already took stay as HEIC, so convert those with this tool.
