Why convert DOCX to HTML?
Word documents are built for printing and editing in Word. HTML is the language of the web. Converting one to the other lets you publish your writing online, drop it into a website or send it as a page that opens on any device.
- Publish to the web. Turn articles, guides, reports and help pages written in Word into web pages without retyping or fixing formatting by hand.
- Paste into a CMS or email editor. Copying from Word often drags in messy inline styles. A clean HTML fragment pastes into WordPress, Shopify, Ghost and newsletter tools without the junk.
- Get semantic structure. Real headings, paragraphs, lists and tables help search engines and screen readers understand your content.
- Share a single file. With images embedded, the HTML is one self-contained file that opens in any browser, with no Word needed.
- Keep documents private. The conversion runs in your browser, so contracts, drafts and internal documents are never uploaded to a server.
How this tool creates your HTML
A .docx file is a ZIP package of XML. ConvertKit Lite reads it in your browser and maps the meaning of your content, not its page layout, onto standard HTML tags.
- Headings and paragraphs. Word's Heading styles become h1 to h6 tags, and normal text becomes paragraphs.
- Text emphasis. Bold and italic text are kept with strong and em tags.
- Lists, links and tables. Bulleted and numbered lists, hyperlinks and tables are kept as proper ul, ol, a and table elements.
- Images. Pictures are embedded directly in the file so nothing breaks when you move it. You can also remove them for a smaller, text-only result.
- Two output types. Full HTML page adds a head, a viewport tag and simple readable styling. Clean HTML fragment gives only the content for pasting into your own template.
Need plain text instead? Try DOCX to TXT. Want a printable version? RTF to PDF and JPG to PDF cover other formats.
Tips for the cleanest HTML
- Use real heading styles in Word. Choose Heading 1, Heading 2 and so on from the Styles gallery instead of making text big and bold by hand. That is what becomes proper headings in HTML.
- Use Word's list buttons. Typing dashes or numbers by hand creates plain paragraphs. Real bullet and number lists convert into real list tags.
- Pasting into a CMS? Choose Clean HTML fragment, open the file in a text editor, copy everything and paste it into the code or HTML view.
- Want it to look like your site? The full page includes only light default styling. Add your own CSS, or use the fragment inside your template.
- Large images slowing things down? Embedded images add to the file size. Remove them, or compress them first with the Image Compressor & Resizer.
- Old .doc file? Open it in Word, choose Save As, pick .docx, then convert the new file here.
- Check tables on mobile. Very wide tables may need horizontal scrolling on small screens, so test the result on a phone before publishing.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about the ConvertKit Lite DOCX to HTML tool.
Are my documents uploaded to a server?
No. The HTML is created in your browser, so your Word files stay on your device.
What is the difference between the two output types?
Full HTML page gives a complete document with a head, readable styling and a responsive layout, ready to open in a browser. Clean HTML fragment gives only the content (headings, paragraphs, lists, tables), ready to paste into your own page or CMS.
What is kept from the Word file?
Headings, paragraphs, bold and italic text, lists, tables, links, footnotes and images are kept. Fonts, colors, page margins, headers, footers and exact layout are not, so the result stays clean and semantic.
How are images handled?
Images are embedded inside the HTML file as data, so you get one self-contained file. Choose Remove images if you want a smaller, text-only result.
Can I convert old .doc files?
No. Only modern .docx files are supported. Open a .doc file in Word and use Save As to save it as .docx first.
Can I convert many files at once?
Yes. Add several DOCX files, convert them together, and download each HTML file or one ZIP.
Can I paste the HTML into WordPress or another CMS?
Yes. Choose Clean HTML fragment, open the downloaded file in a text editor, copy the content and paste it into the HTML or code view of your CMS, blog or email editor.
Will my Word headings become real HTML headings?
Yes, when you use Word's built-in Heading styles. Heading 1 becomes an h1, Heading 2 becomes an h2, and so on. Text that is only made big and bold by hand stays a normal paragraph, so apply real heading styles in Word first for the best structure.
Why does the HTML look different from my Word document?
The converter focuses on clean, meaningful HTML rather than copying page layout. Fonts, colors, margins and page breaks are not carried over, so the page adapts to any screen and you can style it with your own CSS.
Can I convert a password-protected DOCX?
No. Encrypted documents cannot be read in the browser. Open the file in Word, remove the password, save a copy, and convert that copy.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no fixed limit because nothing is uploaded. Documents with many large images take longer and need more memory, so choose Remove images or close other heavy tabs if a file is slow.
Does it work on phones and tablets?
Yes. The converter runs in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux with no app to install.
Is the DOCX to HTML converter really free?
Yes. It is free with no account, no watermark and no limit on how many files you convert.
Do I need to install anything on my Mac?
No. The converter runs in your browser, so there is no app or extension to install.
Can I convert a Pages document to HTML here?
Export it from Pages as a Word (.docx) file first, then add that file to the converter.
